The Rest on the Flight into Egypt

Copy of a work by Pomponio Amalteo (1505-1588)
Church of All Saints (The Ognissanti), Venice, Italy

St. Joseph is as usual depicted with a staff. He was traditionally pictured as an old man until Molanus registered his objections in 1570. The customary ass is absent; instead, the Virgin Mary sits on a bit of niche in a cliff. An angel hands her a fruit from the palm tree, an adaptation of the story in chapter 20 of The Gospel of Pseudo Matthew.
